An A. Quincy Jones Mod Where Frank Capra Lived:
A midcentury modern home built by famed architect A. Quincy Jones and inhabited by the late “It’s a Wonderful Life” director Frank Capra has returned to market in La Quinta, CA.
As the legend goes, the Academy Award winner took up residence in the A. Quincy Jones-designed home shortly after retiring from filmmaking in 1961. The storied property was a real estate Christmas tale of sorts last year, when it surfaced for $1.575 million last December. It was off the market earlier this year but has since relisted for the same price. The home last sold in 2004 for $900,000.
Built in 1960, the midcentury residence is characteristic of Jones’ modern touch: Floor-to-ceiling walls of glass bridge indoor-outdoor living spaces, while 14-foot beamed ceilings extend outside the home to give the roof a grooved appearance.
Inside, the 4,221-square-foot house offers four bedrooms and five bathrooms, with amenities ranging from a remodeled gourmet kitchen to a stone-lined living room with a fireplace and a sunken wet bar. Last but certainly not least, a private patio and pool look out over the 10th hole of the La Quinta Country Club, with rows of palms and the Santa Rosa Mountains dotting the horizon.
Besides the timeless angelic classic that starred James Stewart and Donna Reed, Capra established himself as America’s preeminent filmmaker during the Great Depression with a trio of Oscars for Best Director. His 1935 movie “It Happened One Night” became the first film to sweep the five major Academy Awards categories.
